In the Format Picture dialog box, select Picture tab Color select an option. Microsoft Excel doesn't come with a built-in watermark button. But you can use an image, like a logo, to create a watermark. Select Insert Header & Footer. Tap on the header and on the Design tab on the ribbon, click Picture.

In this post, we'll show you how to overcome the inherent formatting finickiness in Microsoft Excel 2016 and add a watermark to your spreadsheet (without clashing with your data!).

We previously showed you how to add a watermark to your Microsoft Word documents. Although there isn't a built-in watermark feature in Excel like there is in Word, you can still create watermarks on your spreadsheet. It just takes a little creativity.

Excel, while highly revered for its infinite data crunching power, isn't particularly geared toward printer-friendliness. But occasionally, you will want to get your spreadsheets on paper. While encryption and password protection tools in Excel will keep your spreadsheets secure in their digital form, a watermark can help properly mark and control your sensitive data when you print it out.

In this article, we'll show you how.

Add an Image as a Watermark to Your Workbooks in Excel 2016

Compared to Microsoft Word documents, formatting in Excel is a little unintuitive. Working with watermarks in Excel is no exception. There is no built-in watermark feature, so instead, you'll have to insert an image into your spreadsheet and then tweak it a bit.

The place to add your image is in the header. To do this, go to the Insert tab and click Header & Footer. This puts you in the Header & Footer tools ribbon and lets you start editing the header.

Click Picture to add a picture.

Unlike Microsoft Word, you initially won't see a preview of what you just inserted. Instead, you'll only see a text string until you click outside of the header.

As you can see, the image I just inserted clashes with the data.

You can modify the image by clicking in the header and footer again, then click the Format Picture button, then select the Picture tab. There you can adjust the brightness and contrast in the Image control section. You can click in the Color drop-down then choose Washout for a good watermark effect.

Now your data won't get lost in the image.

Use WordArt to Add Watermark in Excel 2016

For text-based watermarks, you can use Word art. This is similar to the method used to add a watermark in a Microsoft Word 2016. The steps are pretty much the same in Excel 2016. Select the Insert tab, click on the Word Art menu, then choose the desired style.

Mac

Enter your watermark text, right-click the Word Art text, then click Format Shape.

Enter your watermark text, right-click the Word Art text, then click Format Shape.

This will activate the Format Shape task pane. Click the Text Options tab, select the Text and Fill tab, then expand the Text Fill and Outline menus. Use the Transparency slider to adjust the opacity of the WordArt.

If you're a manager building a budget in Excel, you'll likely need to solicit input from your staff. Sometimes that collaboration takes several iterations, so it's useful to add a DRAFT watermark to a worksheet. Or sometimes a sensitive document needs to be kept secret, making it important to add a CONFIDENTIAL watermark.

Excel doesn't come with a built in way to add a watermark, but there's a pretty painless way to do it: just place a pre-built .PNG graphic file in the header of your Excel worksheet, and it displays as a watermark. To get you started, we've created DRAFT and CONFIDENTIAL watermarks that you can access right from this post. Just follow the steps below the graphic.

First you'll need to open and save the watermarks we've created. Right-click on DRAFT or CONFIDENTIAL, and on the shortcut menu, click Save Target As. Specify the location where you want to save the picture and do so.

In your worksheet, click the Insert Tab and in the Text group, click Header & Footer. Excel switches to Page Layout view, and your cursor appears in the center header box at the top of the worksheet page (under Header).

Click the Design tab, and in the Header & Footer elements group, click Picture. Find your copy of the DRAFT or CONFIDENTIAL .PNG file on your computer and add it to the header. You'll see that your worksheet header contains the word 'Picture.' To view the actual watermark, just click in any cell in your worksheet.

When you're viewing it, you'll be in Page Layout view. To return to the Normal view–the way you typically work in Excel–click the Normal button on the status bar at the bottom right of your screen.

(Note that headers are visible only in Page Layout view, the Print Previewwindow in Backstage view (File tab, Print), and the printed worksheet.)
